Ollie Watkins came off the bench to inspire Aston Villa to a crucial 2–1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, keeping their surprise Premier League title challenge firmly on track.
The England striker, who had scored just three league goals before the match, made an instant impact after being introduced by Unai Emery in the second half. His brace secured Villa’s 11th consecutive league victory and lifted them back within three points of leaders Arsenal, whom they face next.
Chelsea dominated much of the first half and went into the break deservedly ahead. Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez both came close before the Blues finally broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, when Reece James’ corner deflected off Joao Pedro and into the net. It was Pedro’s second goal in as many games and capped a strong opening period for the hosts.
However, the game shifted after the interval as Chelsea faded and Villa grew in confidence. Emery’s triple substitution on the hour mark proved decisive, with Watkins leading the comeback. He equalised after his initial shot was saved by Robert Sanchez, only for the rebound to strike him and roll in off the post.
Villa continued to press and were rewarded again when Watkins rose highest to head home Youri Tielemans’ corner, completing the turnaround and silencing Stamford Bridge.
The result leaves Chelsea fifth after just one win in six league games, while Villa strengthen their grip on a Champions League place and move 10 points clear of the Blues in that race.
