The United States Africa Command has reaffirmed that its partnership with Nigeria is based on mutual interest and Nigerian invitation, not imposition.
Officials from both sides stressed that Nigeria controls the scope of cooperation, which includes intelligence sharing and military training for troops in the North-East.
The partnership has reportedly improved counter-insurgency operations, though controversy continues following Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by Donald Trump in 2025 and subsequent US airstrikes in Sokoto targeting ISIS-linked militants.
