The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and 123 partners have appealed for $1.6 billion to assist millions displaced by the ongoing Sudan war, as the conflict nears its fourth year.
The 2026 Sudan Regional Refugee Response Plan targets 5.9 million people across seven neighbouring countries: Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, South Sudan and Uganda.
The war, which erupted in April 2023 between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, has displaced 4.3 million refugees across the region. UNHCR described Sudan as the world’s largest displacement crisis amid severe funding shortages.
Egypt alone hosts 1.4 million Sudanese refugees, but funding cuts have reduced aid, with support per refugee dropping from $11 to $4 monthly. In eastern Chad, thousands remain without shelter, highlighting the urgent need for international assistance.
