The Union of European Football Associations has fined Real Madrid after a supporter made a Nazi salute before a Champions League match. The European football body announced the decision following an investigation into the incident. UEFA imposed a fine of 15,000 euros on the Spanish club.
In addition, the disciplinary body ordered a partial closure of 500 seats in the stadium. However, the sanction will remain suspended during a one-year probation period. UEFA explained that the punishment relates to discriminatory behaviour displayed by a supporter.
The incident occurred before the second leg of Real Madrid’s play-off tie against Benfica. According to UEFA, such actions violate football’s disciplinary regulations and anti-discrimination policies. Consequently, the governing body acted to reinforce its zero-tolerance stance on racism and hateful conduct.
Reports indicated that the supporter performed the offensive gesture inside the stadium stands before kick-off. Following the incident, Real Madrid acted quickly to address the situation. Club officials identified the individual involved and removed him from the stadium.
UEFA emphasised that discriminatory behaviour remains unacceptable in football environments. Therefore, the disciplinary measures aim to discourage similar incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, the Champions League tie between Real Madrid and Benfica also faced controversy earlier. Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni was accused of directing racist remarks at Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior. However, Prestianni has denied the allegations.
Despite the controversy, Real Madrid progressed to the round of sixteen. The Spanish club will now face Manchester City in the next stage of the competition.
