The Istanbul Turkey public prosecutor’s office ordered the arrest of 46 individuals in a major football betting scandal. Among them, 29 players face charges for betting on matches, including games involving their own teams. Authorities revealed that 27 players allegedly wagered on matches in which they personally participated.
The investigation also targets referees. Eighteen officials were held earlier for suspected betting activity. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had previously suspended 149 referees accused of placing wagers on professional matches. A review of 571 referees found 371 had opened sports-betting accounts, while 152 reportedly placed bets.
Several officials now face suspensions ranging from eight to twelve months, according to TFF disciplinary rulings. Among those named is Metehan Baltacı of Galatasaray, previously banned for nine months for involvement in betting. Fenerbahçe midfielder Mert Hakan Yandaş allegedly used another person’s account to place wagers.
The scandal also involves club management. Two club presidents allegedly attempted to manipulate a third-division match during the 2023–2024 season, raising serious concerns. Police have detained 35 of the 46 suspects, while five individuals remain outside Turkey.
To date, the TFF has imposed penalties on over 1,000 players nationwide. Sanctions range from 45-day bans to year-long suspensions. Most affected players compete in lower-tier leagues, while only one foreign player, Konyaspor’s Alassane Ndao, received a 12-month ban.
The betting scandal continues to send shockwaves through Turkish football. Authorities and the federation remain committed to restoring integrity in leagues and matches across the Turkey.
