Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Monday confirmed receiving a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump, in which he dismissed any obligation to focus solely on peace and restated his desire for U.S. control of Greenland.
Støre said the letter was a response to a brief message he sent Trump earlier in the day. In the letter, Trump claimed to be speaking on behalf of himself and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and criticised Norway’s decision not to award him the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his role in what he described as “stopping eight wars.”
“I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of peace. I can now think about what is good and proper for the United States,” Trump wrote.
He also argued that the U.S. has contributed more to NATO than any other member and said it was time for NATO to act in America’s interest, adding that “complete and total control of Greenland by the United States is the only way to ensure global security.”
