The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)died and four others were injured in a road accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State.
The crash occurred on Monday evening as the journalists were returning from a wedding ceremony in Gombe South Senatorial District, where they had gone to honour a colleague from the Nigerian Television Authority.
Gombe State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Samson Kaura, said a total of 11 people were involved in the accident. “Seven of them died on the spot, while four sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he stated.
Preliminary findings suggest the crash was a lone incident, possibly caused by a tyre burst. The driver may have applied the brakes suddenly, causing the vehicle to overturn. FRSC rescue teams were deployed immediately and are continuing recovery and rescue operations.
The injured victims have been taken to nearby health facilities for treatment. The FRSC said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, and a comprehensive report will be released once the operation is concluded.
