The Nigerian Senate has firmly dismissed allegations of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria, describing recent claims by US Senator Ted Cruz and television host Bill Maher as false, misleading, and capable of dividing the nation.
Senators Condemn Misinformation
During Thursday’s plenary, lawmakers debated a motion titled “Urgent Need to Correct Misconceptions Regarding the Purported ‘Christian Genocide’ Narrative in Nigeria and International Communities.”
The motion, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South) and co-sponsored by other northern senators, emphasized the need to counter what they termed “dangerous misinformation” spreading internationally.
Senator Magatakarda Wamakko (Sokoto North) said the genocide narrative was “outright misinformation aimed at destroying our nation,” while Senator Sumaila Kawu (Kano South) warned that such false claims could strain Nigeria’s foreign relations and fuel sectarian tension.
Call for National Security Reinforcement
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (Ondo South) urged a national rethink on terrorism and security, stressing the need to “redefine Nigeria’s counter-terrorism framework.”
Senate to Partner Federal Government
The Senate resolved to work closely with the Federal Government on stronger counter-terrorism strategies and diplomatic engagement to correct international misconceptions. Further deliberations on the motion were adjourned to next Tuesday.
