The Rural Electrification Agency REA has partnered with Lotus Bank to expand renewable energy financing nationwide. The collaboration focuses on creating a dedicated funding facility under the DARES programme. This move aims to accelerate access to clean energy across underserved communities. Importantly, it signals a shift toward large-scale, structured financing solutions.
According to the REA, the partnership followed a high-level strategic meeting between both institutions. The discussions marked a transition from project-based funding to a more sustainable financial framework. Consequently, renewable energy developers may access funding more efficiently. This approach supports faster deployment across rural and peri-urban areas.
REA Managing Director Abba Aliyu urged Lotus Bank to adopt a bold financing strategy. He emphasised the need for a clear global funding target. Moreover, he noted that Nigeria’s energy transition requires scalable investment models. Pilot projects alone, he explained, cannot deliver nationwide impact.
Aliyu also stressed the importance of strong internal standards within the proposed facility. Such standards would allow developers to expand operations rapidly. As a result, more communities could benefit from reliable clean energy. This intentional approach, he said, is critical for sector-wide growth.
Meanwhile, Lotus Bank plans to institutionalise its renewable energy support. The bank is expected to create a standalone financing window for clean energy projects. This reflects growing confidence in renewable energy as a bankable sector. Increasingly, financial institutions now view clean energy as commercially viable.
Both organisations are working toward signing a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement is expected to unlock structured capital for energy deployment. Ultimately, the REA believes the partnership will inspire similar private-sector investments. Together, these efforts aim to reduce Nigeria’s energy access gap sustainably.
