Nigerian volleyball player Rahmatu Ismail has called for increased grassroots investment and better infrastructure to support female athletes in the country.
Speaking about her career journey, the Kwara-born athlete said poor facilities and limited resources continue to slow the development of volleyball and women’s sports in Nigeria.
Ismail currently plays for NY Spikers Volleyball Club in Abuja and has previously represented Benue Queens, Fire Service and Nigeria Customs.
She also featured in international competitions including the African Women Club Championship in Egypt and the Zone 3 Championship in Ghana.
Despite gaining valuable exposure, Ismail said Nigerian teams still struggle with poor logistics and inadequate preparation compared to stronger African sides.
“It is discouraging training on incomplete courts. Female athletes deserve better support,” she said.
The volleyball star appealed for improved sporting facilities, quality kits and sponsorship opportunities to help young talents grow professionally.
Looking ahead, she expressed confidence that she could secure an international volleyball career within the next five years, possibly in Qatar or Kuwait.
Ismail also named Melissa Vargas as her role model, praising her consistency and achievements on the global stage.
