Mbappe Wins Legal Case Against PSG
Paris Saint-Germain have been ordered to pay Kylian Mbappe €60m following a court ruling over unpaid wages. The French forward had taken PSG to court after leaving the club for Real Madrid last summer.
The court found PSG failed to pay three months of contracted wages, as well as an ethics and signing bonus. Mbappe had originally sought €240m in damages and unpaid wages. PSG, meanwhile, claimed compensation for Mbappe’s failed €300m move to Saudi side Al-Hilal.
Mbappe’s legal team welcomed the verdict. They said it confirmed that contracts must be honoured, emphasizing that labour law applies to everyone, even in professional football. They also highlighted that Mbappe met all his obligations for seven years until his departure.
Background of the Dispute
The dispute lasted more than two years. PSG reportedly froze Mbappe out of the squad after he decided against moving to Saudi Arabia. PSG later reinstated him, claiming they believed he had agreed to forgo some end-of-contract payments. Mbappe’s representatives dismissed this as “fantasy.”
PSG also accused Mbappe of acting disloyally by withholding his decision not to extend his contract for nearly 11 months, suggesting the club suffered “significant damages.”
Similar Cases in Football
While rare, other players have successfully claimed unpaid wages in court. In November 2024, Manchester City were ordered to pay £8m to Benjamin Mendy. City had stopped paying Mendy after he faced legal charges, withholding wages until his contract ended. He was later acquitted, and the tribunal awarded him compensation for the unpaid period.
Former Derby County player Richard Keogh also received £2.3m after the club breached his contract following a knee injury and disputed contract termination.
