The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has dismissed viral videos alleging police involvement in a shooting at the National Union of Road Transport Workers headquarters in Garki II, Abuja, describing them as false and misleading.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer Josephine Adeh said officers only intervened after receiving a distress call around 7:00 a.m. on March 23, 2026, reporting that about 300 armed individuals had invaded the premises and were removing items.
She explained that a response team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Isyaku Sharu was deployed to the scene, where investigations revealed the group attempted to enforce a court order without authorised court officials.
The situation escalated into a clash when other union members resisted, leaving one person with severe machete injuries, while several others were injured and taken to the hospital.
Adeh confirmed that seven suspects, including the court-reinstated NURTW president, Ibikunle Baruwa, were arrested and arraigned at Magistrates’ Court 1 in Wuse Zone 2.
Police said normalcy has since been restored, reiterating that their personnel did not open fire during the incident.
