An aide to Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has criticised Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his recent call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, describing the demand as a slight on Nigeria’s judicial system.
According to the governor’s aide, Obi’s position appears to undermine the authority and independence of the courts, especially as Kanu’s case remains a subject of ongoing legal proceedings. He argued that public figures should exercise caution when commenting on matters that are before the judiciary to avoid creating the impression of external pressure.
Furthermore, the aide maintained that respecting due process is essential to strengthening democratic institutions and preserving public confidence in the justice system. He stressed that every citizen, regardless of status, should allow the courts to determine cases based on the law and available evidence.
The remarks came amid renewed debates surrounding the detention and trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). While supporters of Kanu have continued to demand his release, critics insist that legal procedures should be allowed to run their course.
Meanwhile, Peter Obi has consistently advocated dialogue and peaceful resolution of issues affecting the South-East. His latest appeal has, however, generated mixed reactions among political stakeholders and members of the public, further reigniting discussions on the balance between political intervention and judicial independence in Nigeria.
