Factional leadership within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated political tension ahead of the 2027 general election in Nigeria as a group led by Tanimu Turaki officially declared former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate.
The declaration was made during a special national convention held in Abuja after the faction relocated its activities due to a sealed venue incident involving security operatives.
Although Jonathan was absent, his nomination was formally ratified and his Certificate of Return was received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker Fred Agbedi.Party leaders insisted the move was in line with court judgments and the PDP constitution despite controversy over INEC recognition.
Speaking after the event, Turaki accused unnamed political actors of attempting to undermine democracy and urged supporters to remain peaceful and focused on electoral victory. He emphasized that disagreements should be settled through the ballot rather than violence, expressing confidence that the faction would prevail in future elections.
The faction also defended its decision to proceed with the convention, citing legal backing and notifying the Independent National Electoral Commission of its activities. Meanwhile, rival PDP stakeholders loyal to Nyesom Wike distanced themselves from the gathering, insisting on an alternative 2027 presidential arrangement within the party.
Analysts say the development highlights deepening internal divisions within the PDP as factions position themselves ahead of the 2027 election, while observers continue to monitor how legal and political battles will shape the party’s future and Nigeria’s broader democratic landscape in the coming political season very closely.
