Fresh divisions have emerged within Nigeria’s opposition camp ahead of the 2027 presidential election after allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar argued that no southern candidate can defeat President Bola Tinubu.
The statement from Atiku’s camp sparked reactions from major opposition parties, including All Progressives Grand Alliance, Labour Party, the Young Progressives Party, and the New Nigeria People’s Party.
The parties rejected claims that power should immediately return to the North after Tinubu’s first term, insisting that fairness and political balance require the presidency to remain in the South.
APGA spokesperson Ejimofor Opara argued that Tinubu remains defeatable regardless of region, while the YPP maintained that competence and leadership capacity should matter more than zoning arrangements.
Political observers believe the disagreement has exposed growing cracks within the opposition coalition as preparations for the 2027 election gradually intensify.
