Peter Obi has called on the Super Eagles to remain strong and focused following Nigeria’s dramatic exit from the 2026 World Cup playoffs.
Nigeria’s campaign came to a heartbreaking end after a 1–1 draw against DR Congo at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday. The match was decided in a penalty shootout, where Nigeria fell 4–3, marking the second consecutive World Cup the team will miss.
In a heartfelt message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi praised the team’s dedication and sacrifice. He wrote:
“Our dear Super Eagles, I know how deeply yesterday’s outcome weighs on each of you. When you wear the green and white, you carry the heartbeat of the whole nation. I acknowledge the hard work, sacrifice, and commitment you put into every match. But let this moment not break your spirit. Great teams are defined by their response to adversity.”
Obi urged the players to regroup and rebuild with renewed focus:
“What matters now is how we stand, regroup, and rebuild with even greater discipline, focus, and preparedness. I am confident you can rise stronger. Do not let today overshadow the greatness of tomorrow. The Eagle never bows its head; it lifts its wings. Keep your heads high and stay committed. Nigeria believes in you, and together, we will soar again. Keep soaring, Super Eagles.”
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle raised concerns about alleged interference during the penalty shootout, claiming that a DR Congo staff member engaged in “voodoo” tactics.
Despite the setback, Obi’s message reinforces the nation’s support for the Super Eagles as they look to bounce back stronger in future international tournaments.
