Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for key reforms at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), including the restoration of its Law programme and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its academic system.
Obasanjo appealed Abeokuta while receiving the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Uduma Uduma, and members of his management team.
According to a statement issued in Abuja by NOUN’s Director of Media and Publicity, Ibrahim Sheme, Obasanjo emphasised the need for innovation, modernisation and expanded access to quality education. He also urged the university to increase student enrolment.
The immediate past Vice-Chancellor, Olufemi Peters, said the institution had made significant progress in integrating AI into its academic content, earning recognition from international educational bodies.
Peters disclosed that NOUN currently has over 300,000 registered students, with about 190,000 active, explaining that the gap reflects varying levels of participation.
In his remarks, Uduma pledged to revive the Law programme and consolidate ongoing reforms. He thanked Obasanjo for his continued support for the institution’s growth.
The vice-chancellor later visited the university’s Abeokuta Study Centre, where the Centre Director, Mr Oyekunle Adegboyega, conducted him round the facility.
