The Nigeria Women’s Football League has fined Ekiti Queens N2.5m and ordered them to play their next three home matches at a neutral venue after their fans attacked match officials during a league game against Edo Queens in Ado-Ekiti. The incident occurred after Edo Queens secured a 1–0 win through Atume Doosuur’s 67th-minute goal, prompting home fans to throw objects at the officials. A viral video showed security operatives shielding the referees from the angry crowd.
Following a review of match reports and video evidence, the NWFL found Ekiti Queens guilty of failing to provide adequate security, failing to control their supporters, and creating an unsafe match environment. The league assigned fines for each violation, totalling N2.5m, and directed the club to host their next three home fixtures at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
NWFL COO Modupe Shabi condemned the attack and stressed the league’s strict stance on safety and professionalism. She said the assault on referees was unacceptable and violated league regulations. She added that protecting match officials is non-negotiable and that violence or intimidation will attract strong sanctions.
Shabi noted that the penalties serve as a warning to all clubs to uphold safety standards and maintain discipline. Match-day three of the season concluded on Thursday, with Adamawa Queens and FC Robo topping their groups.
