The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation NTTF has petitioned the International Table Tennis Federation after its players were denied entry visas for the 2025 World Youth Championships in Romania. The youth teams earned their qualification after winning the boys’ U-19 title at the 2025 African Youth Championships in Lagos.
The U-19 squad features Matthew Kuti, Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, Muiz Adegoke and Matthew Fabunmi. Meanwhile, the U-15 team includes Tobi Adebakin, Usman Ayoola and Atuwon Quadri. Their visa refusal sparked concern across Nigeria’s table tennis community because it threatens the nation’s place at a major global event.
In a petition signed by NTTF President Adesoji Tayo, the federation condemned the decision. Tayo described the refusal as a breach of international sportsmanship and fair participation. He stressed that the reasons offered for the denial appeared unjust and discriminatory. He also noted that such actions weaken the spirit of unity promoted in global sports.
The setback came despite weeks of intensive preparation by coaches and players. It dampened team morale and caused financial losses for the federation. Nigeria had expected to represent Africa in both the U-19 and U-15 team events as continental champions.
The NTTF also informed the ITTF that it would not accept penalties tied to hotel or accommodation bookings. The federation insisted that the situation arose through no fault of its own.
Tayo urged the ITTF to take swift action to prevent similar issues. He warned that the development disrupts Nigeria’s effort to groom another generation of elite players.
The 2025 ITTF World Youth Championships run from November 23 to 30.
