Coaches and technical officials in the Niger Delta are set to benefit from specialized training. The program aims to enhance their efficiency ahead of the 2026 Niger Delta Games. Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, Managing Director of Dunamis Icon Limited, announced the initiative on Channels Sports.
Ikpokpo highlighted challenges faced by coaches, including poor remuneration and limited support for talent discovery. He questioned how they can travel to communities without adequate funding or resources. To address this, organizers will collaborate with the Niger Delta Development Commission. The Nigeria Local Content Development and Management Board will also support a January workshop specifically for coaches and officials.
The program emphasizes professional development, preparing coaches to identify and nurture young athletes effectively. Ikpokpo stressed that government investment in sports infrastructure is as crucial as funding roads and hospitals. Schools, he noted, often lack sports facilities, even though they serve as cradles of athletic development. “Schools are the cradle of sports development, yet many lack proper sports facilities,” he explained.
The second edition of the Niger Delta Games will take place in Benin, Edo State. Organizers promise the event will surpass the first edition in every aspect. With enhanced training, infrastructure, and planning, the region can foster elite athletes more effectively. By supporting coaches, facilities, and development programs, the Niger Delta is set for long-term sports growth.
These initiatives aim to sustain talent discovery and provide better preparation for athletes and officials. Active government and organizational support will make the 2026 Niger Delta Games a landmark sporting event in Nigeria.
