Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for cocaine during an ATP tournament in Mallorca, Spain.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency confirmed that Kyrgios provided a sample on June 22 during the ATP 250 event. A World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratory subsequently detected benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, in the sample.
The provisional suspension came into effect on August 4.
Kyrgios, 31, has the right to appeal the suspension but had not done so when the ITIA announced the case.
The Australian acknowledged the positive test in a statement posted on Instagram, accepting responsibility and apologising to his supporters, family, sponsors and young fans.
He described the incident as a serious mistake but said it occurred during a difficult period in his career, which has been heavily affected by injuries.
Kyrgios said his physical struggles had made it difficult to meet his own expectations as a professional player and that accepting the possibility of being near the end of his career had been challenging.
However, he acknowledged that his circumstances did not justify his actions.
While the provisional suspension remains in place, Kyrgios is barred from competing in, coaching at or attending events sanctioned by the professional tennis tours, including Grand Slam tournaments.
The former world No. 13 has been restricted by injuries in recent seasons and has played only four singles matches in 2026. His most recent appearance came at Wimbledon, where he partnered Alexander Bublik in the men’s doubles.
Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon singles final in 2022 and has won seven ATP singles titles, as well as the 2022 Australian Open men’s doubles title with Thanasi Kokkinakis.
He said he would take a 28-day break from social media and public life to focus on his wellbeing.
