The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step toward strengthening sports by partnering with National Basketball Association NBA Nigeria. This collaboration is designed to nurture grassroots talent, expand basketball infrastructure, and create new opportunities for young athletes across the state.
During a courtesy visit to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at Lagos House, Marina. The NBA Nigeria team unveiled their plans for the strategic growth of basketball in Lagos. The high-powered delegation featured former Nigerian-American basketball player. Also current ESPN analyst, Chiney Ogwumike, who joined other officials in discussing long-term developmental initiatives.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the meeting as highly impactful. He emphasized that sports remain a critical driver of youth development, community building, and social inclusion. According to him, NBA Nigeria is committed not only to expanding grassroots basketball. But also to leveraging its global network to attract investments and strengthen Lagos’ sporting ecosystem.
The partnership will prioritize modernizing sports infrastructure, equipping coaches with technical training, and enhancing the overall capacity of sports professionals. Beyond the physical game, the initiative seeks to build pathways for young athletes to gain international exposure, recognition, and career opportunities.
