The Military Pensions Board (MPB) has dismissed a fraudulent WhatsApp platform created under its name. Warning military retirees and the public to avoid interaction with it.
In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, the board’s spokesperson, Aliyu Mohammed. Explained that the group, labeled Military Pensions Board, was set up by unidentified individuals and does not represent the agency.
Over time, cybercriminals have increasingly relied on messaging apps and social platforms to impersonate government institutions and deceive unsuspecting citizens. Military retirees and veterans are often singled out by such schemes. Which typically involve fake promises, misleading updates, or financial extortion disguised as official communication.
Mohammed clarified that the MPB has not authorized or established any WhatsApp forums for pensioners or ex-servicemen. He described the circulating group as the handiwork of fraudsters exploiting vulnerable communities. “To be clear, the MPB communicates with its stakeholders strictly through verified press releases, official statements, and recognized digital channels,” he said.
He reassured retired officers and veterans that their welfare remains a central concern for the board. He also urged them to verify suspicious messages by contacting official MPB offices rather than relying on unverified online groups.
The MPB, a government agency in Nigeria, manages the administration and disbursement of pensions and gratuities to former military personnel. It also acts as a point of support for veterans, addressing challenges related to entitlements. In recent years, the agency has modernized its operations by upgrading digital payment systems and improving communication with beneficiaries.
Nonetheless, the rise of online fraud has created fresh risks, with scammers increasingly posing as official institutions. The MPB therefore renewed its commitment to transparency. Also encouraging pensioners to remain alert and avoid falling victim to fake WhatsApp platforms.
