Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi has sharply criticized Nigeria’s preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Speaking on his ObiOne podcast, he highlighted ongoing administrative problems within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Mikel expressed disappointment over the build-up to the tournament in Morocco. He questioned how a national coach could still be owed salaries at such a critical stage. “I’m not impressed at all with the preparation. After the World Cup qualifiers, things should be better,” he said.
The former midfielder urged the resignation of the NFF board following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. He emphasized that unresolved issues affect players, coaches, and fans alike. “You can’t enter AFCON with lingering problems. Nigeria deserves better. Our football deserves better,” Mikel added.
Reports revealed that Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle was owed three months of salary and bonuses. National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko confirmed that the NSC has been paying Chelle’s salary on the NFF’s behalf. “This support ensures the coach continues his duties despite contract issues,” Dikko explained.
Nigeria will compete in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. The team will face Tanzania first on December 23 in Fès. Ahead of the tournament, the Super Eagles lost 2-1 to Egypt in a pre-AFCON friendly in Cairo.
With the tournament approaching, Mikel Obi’s comments underscore the urgent need for stronger management, timely payments, and full preparation.
