Lionel Messi, Inter Miami and Argentina superstar, has opened up about the possibility of featuring in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing that his participation will depend on his physical readiness.
Speaking in a recent post shared by Fabrizio Romano on X, Messi said, “I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don’t want to be a burden. I want to feel good physically, be sure that I can help and contribute things to the group. I will see day to day if I really feel good physically to be like I would like to be able to participate.”
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, who will turn 39 during the 2026 tournament, was instrumental in Argentina’s historic World Cup triumph in Qatar 2022, finally lifting the trophy that had eluded him for much of his career. Since that victory, speculation has intensified over whether Messi will continue his international career long enough to defend the title in North America.
Despite moving to Major League Soccer with Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has maintained his commitment to Argentina, delivering strong performances in World Cup qualifiers that keep the door open for another World Cup campaign.
