African players made strong contributions across Europe’s major leagues over the weekend, with Bryan Mbeumo, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Serhou Guirassy among the standout performers.
In England, Cameroon international Mbeumo scored an impressive solo goal for Manchester United in their 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton. The forward raced through before unleashing a powerful finish past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The goal was Mbeumo’s second in three matches this season after he also scored in Manchester United’s 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.
In Spain, former Arsenal forward Nicolas Pepe scored for Villarreal in their 3-2 defeat to Deportivo La Coruña. The Ivorian winger opened the scoring with a well-taken curling finish.
Aubameyang was instrumental in Deportivo’s comeback, setting up two goals before scoring himself late in the match. The former Gabon international has now scored four goals in four games.
In Italy, Senegal winger Assane Diao scored twice as Como produced a 4-1 comeback victory over Genoa. His goals came in each half to complete an impressive individual performance.
Borussia Dortmund’s Guinea international Serhou Guirassy also had a decisive impact in Germany. He scored and provided an assist as Dortmund fought back from 2-0 down to beat Hoffenheim 3-2.
Morocco’s Bilal El Khannouss was another standout, scoring an impressive solo goal in Stuttgart’s 4-1 win over Cologne.
In France, Ghanaian winger Ernest Nuamah completed Lyon’s scoring in a 3-1 victory over Auxerre after also assisting the opening goal.
