Makhachev Eyes Usman as First Welterweight Title Defence
Fresh off his historic UFC 322 win, new welterweight champion Islam Makhachev is already pushing for his first title defence — and he wants former champion Kamaru Usman. UFC legend Alexander Volkanovski has called the potential bout Makhachev’s “toughest test yet.”
Historic UFC 322 Triumph
Makhachev defeated Jack Della Maddalena via unanimous decision at UFC 322, making history as the first UFC fighter to win titles at lightweight and welterweight. His dominant performance has set the stage for another blockbuster matchup.
Ali Abdelaziz Confirms Makhachev Wants Usman
Makhachev’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, confirmed that his fighter prefers Usman over younger contenders.
“He said he wanted to fight Kamaru Usman… the greatest welterweight of all time,” Abdelaziz said. “Usman is a very tough opponent and a real deal.”

When asked about future opponents, Makhachev was clear:
“They are young and hungry, but Kamaru is still dangerous… If you give me the choice, I’ll take Kamaru,” he told Paul Felder.
Usman Believes He Is Next
After returning to winning form, Usman declared he is ready to reclaim the throne.
“I need to get back to where I belong, and that’s being a champion. I feel that I’m next,” he said on Submission Radio.
A Legacy-Defining Clash in 2026
The fight is being targeted for 2026, giving both men time to prepare.
A victory would push Makhachev deeper into all-time great territory, while Usman has the chance to reclaim the division he once ruled.
