The Labour Party has postponed its ward, local government, and state congresses. Additionally, the party’s national convention, initially scheduled for March 26, 2026, will also be delayed. The party explained the postponement allows broader participation in its ongoing membership re-registration exercise.
Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser to the Interim National Chairman on Media, confirmed the update in Abuja. Previously, ward congresses were scheduled for March 26, local government congresses for March 28, and state congresses for March 31. The national convention was initially planned for April 11, 2026, according to the earlier timetable.
The decision followed a combined stakeholders’ meeting with the Interim National Working Committee and labour union representatives. “The postponement provides sufficient time for members and Nigerians to engage fully in membership re-registration,” Asogwa stated. To ensure a smooth process, the party inaugurated a 45-member Congress and Convention Committee to oversee proceedings.
Hon Ginger Onwusibe, representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency, chairs the committee. Other members include Comrade Salisu N. Mohammed, Hon Obinna Aguocha, Hon Amaobi Ogah, and Hon Ibe Okwara. The committee also features Hon Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Hon Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Hon Benedict Etanabene, and others.
National Chairman Senator Nenadi Usman urged committee members to act diligently, impartially, and responsibly. She encouraged full use of the postponement to complete preparations for successful congresses and conventions. The party appealed to members, INEC, and supporters for understanding and promised a new timetable soon.
