The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, has reported a tragic increase in road fatalities, confirming that 91 people lost their lives in various crashes across the state between January and November 2025.
FRSC Lagos Sector Commander Kehinde Hamzat disclosed the statistics at a press briefing on Friday, held to commemorate the annual Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign. The figures reflect a slight increase compared to the same period in 2024. October recorded the highest number of fatalities with 14 deaths, while January followed with 13 deaths.
Human Error as Primary Cause
Hamzat attributed the road crashes to three factors: human, mechanical, and environmental. He strongly stressed that human factors cause most crashes because drivers fail to take responsibility, even though they can manage the other two factors.
“Human beings can take care of the other two factors… someone who has been driving a road over a period of time should know that when they get to certain areas, they should drive with care,” Hamzat explained.
The Sector Commander pointed to notorious crash zones along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway:
Otedola Bridge: Motorists’ inability to manage the engineering challenges of the area cause frequent accidents.
Kara Bridge: Indiscriminate roadside parking by drivers creates dangerous conditions.
Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign
The press briefing coincided with the launch of the sixth edition of the Don’t Drink and Drive Campaign, held in partnership with the Beer Sectoral Group (BSG) of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).
Abiola Laseinde, Executive Director of the BSG, said the group has a mandate to promote responsible drinking, despite manufacturing alcoholic beverages. The campaign will feature rallies at motor parks and garages to engage drivers in local languages on the dangers of driving under the influence.
Hamzat urged passengers to be vigilant and report any behavior that could endanger their safety, noting that statistics show more passengers die in road crashes than drivers.
