Veteran Nollywood actor and political figure Kenneth Okonkwo has stirred conversation with his recent declaration to support a Northern candidate in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential elections, provided the North unites behind a single, competent leader.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, the former Labour Party chieftain and ally of Peter Obi stated,
“My strategy this time around is that I am going to support a Northerner in 2027… if the whole North is willing to support that person.”
Okonkwo’s Criteria for Support
Okonkwo, now affiliated with a political coalition aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made it clear that his endorsement hinges on competence, national appeal, and unity within the North. He mentioned that candidates like Atiku Abubakar or Aminu Tambuwal could be considered if they meet these standards and have full regional backing.
“If the whole North is ready to support Atiku, why not?” he said.
“If they support Tambuwal, why not?”
Call for Competent Leadership & True Rotation
While weighing in on the rotational presidency, Okonkwo cited the original framework proposed by late Vice President Alex Ekwueme, a system in which Nigeria’s presidency would rotate among six geopolitical zones, each holding power for a four-year term.
He emphasized that what matters most in 2027 is a capable leader, not just regional rotation for its own sake.
