Organisers of the 2026 Iriji Mbaise New Yam Festival have called on stakeholders to keep politics out of the annual cultural celebration, saying the event is designed to promote unity and preserve the cultural heritage of the Mbaise people.
The Chairman of the Iriji Mbaise Central Working Committee, Steve Onu, made the call on Monday at the Ezuruezu Mbaise Civic Centre in Aboh Mbaise, Imo State.
Onu said the festival, scheduled for August, would bring together cultural groups, community leaders and people from across Mbaise and beyond to celebrate the area’s traditions and values.
According to him, the Iriji festival should be viewed as a platform for cultural preservation rather than political activity.
He said the celebration provides an opportunity for the people of Ahiazu, Ezinihitte and Aboh Mbaise Local Government Areas to strengthen their bond and discuss issues affecting the development, peace and unity of the area.
Onu also described the festival as an avenue to showcase the rich cultural heritage of Mbaise to a wider audience and encourage younger generations to remain connected to their roots.
The Chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, Iheukwumere Alaribe, said preparations for the event were progressing well, particularly at Oke Ovoro, the venue for this year’s celebration.
He noted that road repairs and other infrastructure projects were ongoing to improve the area ahead of the festival. Alaribe also commended the Imo State Government for its support for the Mbaise community.
The Iriji Mbaise festival is an annual New Yam celebration held in August and remains one of the major cultural events through which the people of Mbaise celebrate their heritage, strengthen community ties and showcase Igbo traditions.
