Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has dismissed rumours about his death, declaring that he remains strong and healthy at 89.
Speaking at a colloquium in Abeokuta held to mark his 89th birthday, Obasanjo condemned those circulating a fake letter claiming he had announced his death, describing it as the work of mischief-makers.
“I dey kampe,” the former president said, insisting that those wishing him dead were wasting their time because God still had more work for him to do.
Obasanjo, who was born on March 6, 1937, said he believed his continued good health at his age was proof that God had not made a mistake in keeping him alive.
During his lecture titled “Burden and Blessing of Leadership: Reflections from Global Africa to the World,” he also lamented Africa’s persistent leadership crisis, blaming many of the continent’s challenges on leaders who pursue personal gain instead of serving the people.
He stressed that Africa’s development requires honest, courageous and accountable leadership, urging young Africans to take democracy seriously and work toward building strong institutions.
Reflecting on his leadership journey, Obasanjo recalled difficult decisions he faced during the Nigerian Civil War and his presidency between 1999 and 2007, describing leadership as both a burden and a blessing.
He also referenced his imprisonment under the regime of Sani Abacha, saying the experience showed the heavy price leaders sometimes pay for standing by their principles.
