Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has dismissed claims of a presidential bid. Speaking on Channels Television on Friday, he explained that his remarks were misinterpreted by the media.“
I never declared to contest the presidency two days ago,” Baba-Ahmed stated clearly. He emphasized that his recent comments only reaffirmed his membership in the Labour Party. Political discussions about the party’s direction may have sparked misunderstandings among supporters.
While he acknowledged potential political possibilities in the future, no formal decision has been made. Reports suggesting his presidential ambitions circulated widely on social and traditional media. These reports led to speculation and debates among political observers and party supporters.
Baba-Ahmed clarified, “I simply said that I remain in the Labour Party. Nothing more.” He added that any declaration of interest will follow INEC’s timetable and the party’s processes.“ The submission I made was that people must wait for INEC and party guidelines,” he explained.
He criticized social media for spreading misinformation and urged accurate reporting by professional media.“It is unfortunate that social media often sensationalizes and misguides the public,” he remarked.
Baba-Ahmed encouraged media outlets to act as filters, ensuring the public receives correct information. He concluded that patience and verified information are essential for understanding political developments in Nigeria.
