National Hajj Commission of Nigeria has confirmed his resignation. Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman announced the decision through an official statement released in Abuja on Tuesday. He clearly denied any wrongdoing while explaining that his resignation was based solely on personal reasons.
According to Usman, the decision followed careful reflection, prayers, and consultations with close family members. His announcement, however, comes amid growing controversy surrounding leadership issues within the commission. Earlier reports revealed that the NAHCON board submitted a formal petition to President Bola Tinubu.
The petition demanded his removal over alleged financial misconduct and administrative irregularities. Dated January 19, 2026, the document carried signatures from eleven board members. It was titled “Vote of No Confidence in the Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria.”
The petition accused Usman of financial indiscipline and repeated breaches of budgetary procedures. Board members alleged he approved expenditures and contracts without proper authorization. They also claimed the approvals exceeded approved financial limits. Furthermore, the petition stated Usman faced an ongoing investigation by the EFCC.
It alleged violations of the Bureau of Public Procurement Act. The board warned such actions endangered transparency, accountability, and institutional credibility. In response, Usman reaffirmed his innocence and rejected all allegations. He formally submitted his resignation under Section 3(6) of the NAHCON Act.
Usman expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the appointment opportunity. He also thanked Vice President Kashim Shettima for consistent support. Additionally, he appreciated NAHCON staff, stakeholders, and Saudi counterparts for cooperation. His final official engagement involved hosting Saudi Arabia’s Hajj Minister in Abuja. President Tinubu appointed Usman as NAHCON chairman in 2024.
