The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has ordered the prosecution of popular TikTok streamer Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, for engaging in reckless and distracted driving during a live video stream that reportedly resulted in a road traffic crash.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed issued the directive, expressing serious concern over the growing pattern of reckless road use by some celebrities, content creators, and social media influencers.
Unlawful and Dangerous Conduct
In a statement signed by Corps Spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed described Peller’s action, live-streaming while driving, as unlawful and dangerous, noting that it posed a grave danger to lives.
“Live streaming, content creation, recording or engaging in any activity that distracts a driver while driving is a direct violation of established road traffic regulations and poses grave danger not only to the driver but to other innocent road users,” the Corps Marshal stated.
He warned that “fame does not confer immunity from the law, nor does it excuse dangerous behaviour on public roads,” and stressed that “no social media content, online trend or momentary clout is worth a human life.”
Prosecution Ordered
The Corps Marshal has directed the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC to initiate prosecution processes against Peller for the following offenses, in accordance with extant traffic laws
Under Nigerian traffic regulations, the use of a mobile phone while driving even with hands-free devices is prohibited due to its distracting nature, with penalties often including fines and potential imprisonment depending on the severity of the offense.
Call to Entertainment Bodies
He concluded with a stern warning of strict enforcement: the FRSC “will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against any individual, celebrity or otherwise,” found engaging in distracted or reckless driving.
