The Rise
A nephew of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, Engonga held influential posts, including Director-General of the Financial Investigation Agency and later the Insurance Directorate. He was trusted with the country’s finances and seen as a loyal ally of the president.
The Scandal
In 2024, investigators found over 400 sex tapes on his devices during a corruption probe—many involving relatives of senior officials. When clips leaked online, public outrage forced Obiang to sack him. Engonga was soon arrested and sent to the notorious Black Beach Prison.
The Trial
Prosecutors demanded 18 years in jail and a $1.5m fine. But in August 2025, a court sentenced him to eight years, a $220,000 fine, and barred him from public office.
