The long-awaited clash between South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and Nigeria’s Super Eagles will officially take place at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein. FIFA and CAF have cleared the venue to host the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying encounter after initial concerns over its pitch condition.
For weeks, uncertainty surrounded Bafana Bafana’s home fixtures as doubts grew about the stadium’s readiness. However, following thorough inspections by officials, both governing bodies confirmed that the improvements on the pitch meet international standards. In a joint statement, FIFA and CAF highlighted the “encouraging progress” and gave the arena the green light to stage upcoming matches.
Before the blockbuster showdown, the stadium will first host Lesotho’s home fixture against a fellow Southern African nation on Friday, September 5. Lesotho, lacking a FIFA-approved venue, will rely on Free State Stadium to accommodate their World Cup qualifying commitment.
Attention will then shift to the highly anticipated South Africa vs Nigeria clash on September 9. This fixture is shaping up to be a decisive battle in Group standings. Bafana Bafana currently lead the table with 13 points from six matches, putting them in a strong position to push for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles face a tougher task. Sitting fourth with seven points, Nigeria trail Rwanda and Benin Republic, who are level on points in second and third. To keep their World Cup dreams alive, the Eagles must secure maximum points in their remaining fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa.
