The Federal Inland Revenue Service FIRS has partnered with the Abuja City Journal to support the third National Essay Competition. The collaboration reflects the agency’s commitment to education and youth development across Nigeria. Additionally, it strengthens programmes that encourage critical thinking and inspire academic ambition among young people.
The growing contest has attracted over 10,000 submissions from students nationwide this year. The grand finale will be held on November 26 in Abuja, where 25 finalists will be selected from entries received across the country. Significant cash rewards will be offered to the top three contestants. The first, second, and third positions will receive N5m, N3m, and N2m respectively. These prizes are designed to recognise excellence and motivate talented youths to refine their writing skills.
Foluso Sylvanus Ojo, the Chief Executive of ACJ, explained that the competition was created to promote integrity, discipline, and intellectual excellence among young Nigerians. He noted that the high number of entries demonstrates the creativity and determination of the country’s youth. Their involvement shows how eager they are to share new ideas and perspectives.
Meanwhile, this year’s finale will feature comedian Kenny Blaq as host. His presence is intended to make the event lively and memorable for contestants and the audience. Finalists will defend their essays before a panel of experts from academia, the media, and the creative sector. Participants will also have the opportunity to connect with editors, writers, and mentors who can support their future growth.
Overall, this year’s edition has been described as the most competitive yet, highlighting the increasing influence of the programme nationwide.
