A series of fire outbreaks has destroyed onion stocks worth nearly ₦500 million across multiple communities in Sokoto State, raising concerns about supply disruption and rising prices.
The latest incident in Duhuwa village razed 324 storage huts and over 5,800 bags of onions, bringing total losses across affected areas to more than 10,000 bags within a week. The fires reportedly spread rapidly through thatched storage structures, leaving farmers with little chance to salvage their produce.
Authorities are investigating the incidents amid suspicions of possible sabotage, while the Nigerian Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria has called for urgent intervention and support for affected farmers. Experts warn that continued losses could tighten supply and drive up onion prices in the coming weeks.
