The Federal Ministry of Works has announced urgent intervention on the damaged deck of the Shagamu-Benin carriageway, assuring motorists of a swift and lasting solution.
In a statement issued Tuesday by Uchenna Orji, Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, the ministry confirmed that engineers have been dispatched to the site at the Edo-Ondo border, where the Benin-bound section of the bridge developed a visible puncture.
According to the ministry, rehabilitation works will take a maximum of 45 days after concrete laying, to allow proper curing before vehicular movement resumes. The Shagamu-Benin bridge, constructed in 1981, was said to have suffered age-related deterioration.
Umahi assured that a permanent solution is underway, involving the removal and reconstruction of the entire deck slab using modern engineering technology. He apologised to road users for the inconvenience and confirmed that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will manage traffic on one carriageway during repairs.
The Minister further disclosed that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is intervening on more than 30 bridges nationwide in 2025, reaffirming its commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s road infrastructure.
He also commended the individual who raised alarm over the bridge damage, urging Nigerians to appreciate ongoing efforts under the Renewed Hope agenda, which aims to strengthen transport networks as a catalyst for national development.
