From September 1, 2025, passport fees in Nigeria will rise to:
- N100,000 for a 32-page, 5-year booklet
- N200,000 for a 64-page, 10-year booklet
Nigerians abroad will still pay $150 and $230 respectively.
Why the Hike?
The Nigeria Immigration Service says the increase will fund reforms, ensure quicker processing, and curb corruption. It’s the second review in two years, after fees jumped from N35,000 to N50,000 (and N70,000 to N100,000) in 2024.
Faster, Cleaner Process
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said the goal is to deliver passports within one week of enrolment. Key changes include:
- A centralised personalisation centre, now Africa’s largest, with five times the printing capacity.
- Removal of approval powers from Passport Control Officers to end extortion.
Protecting National Identity
Beyond speed, the reforms aim to safeguard Nigeria’s passport from fraud. “In the past, foreigners illegally obtained Nigerian passports. That era is over,” the minister said.
The Bottom Line
Though the hike has stirred debate, the FG insists the reforms will deliver faster, safer, and corruption-free passports.
