The Federal Government has officially declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day celebration. This announcement highlights the government’s recognition of the vital role Nigerian workers play in driving national development and economic progress.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government. In addition, he extended warm congratulations to workers across the country, acknowledging their unwavering dedication and resilience. According to a statement issued on April 29, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, the minister commended the workforce for consistently contributing to Nigeria’s growth.
Furthermore, Tunji-Ojo emphasised that Nigerian workers remain the backbone of the nation’s prosperity. He therefore encouraged them to continue embracing values such as patriotism, productivity, and commitment to duty. These qualities, he noted, are essential for sustaining long-term national progress.
