Plans for the burial of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, known as Omije Ojumi, have been suspended indefinitely. The suspension follows unresolved issues reportedly arising within the singer’s immediate family.
The development was announced on Saturday by gospel artiste Lanre Alewilese through his verified Instagram page. Alewilese stated that the burial planning committee had cancelled all previously announced burial arrangements.
According to him, the decision became necessary due to internal family concerns requiring urgent resolution. He expressed deep regret over any inconvenience caused to fans, colleagues, and well-wishers. Before the suspension, several burial activities had been scheduled to hold in Lagos.
These activities included a service of songs, candlelight procession, and tribute night in Ikeja. A private interment was also planned for family members and close associates the following day. However, all programmes have now been placed on hold pending further family decisions.
In a follow-up video message delivered in Yoruba, Alewilese clarified the decision was collective. He explained that neither personal interests nor individual opinions influenced the cancellation. Alewilese added that the family would officially update Nigerians after reaching a final conclusion.
He said he was only mandated to communicate the change to the public. Bunmi Akinnaanu passed away on January 12, 2026, at a Lagos hospital. Her death was earlier announced by fellow gospel singer Ayo Melody on Instagram. Fondly called Omije Ojumi, she rose to fame through her popular gospel songs.
She began singing early before leaving banking to pursue gospel music fully. In October 2025, a video showed prayers offered for her during a church service. No official confirmation has linked that ailment to her eventual death. The family is expected to announce new burial arrangements later.
