Former Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini, has called on Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withhold assent to the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026.
Igini warned that certain amendments, particularly changes to electronic transmission of results, could weaken Nigeria’s electoral integrity. He criticised the reversal of Clause 60, which initially mandated real-time electronic transmission of polling unit results.
He urged the President to reconsider signing the bill, stressing that the judiciary must uphold due process to protect voters’ rights and prevent democratic instability.
