Stakeholders in the environment and energy sectors have gathered in Abuja to advance a “Just Transition” energy framework aimed at ensuring inclusive growth as Nigeria moves toward low-carbon development.
The workshop, organised by the Society for Planet and Prosperity in collaboration with the Centre for Climate Change and Development and ODI Global, focused on aligning climate goals with development priorities.
Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of SPP, said Nigeria’s energy transition is not merely a technical decarbonisation challenge but also an economic, political, and social issue with far-reaching implications for jobs, revenue, and national stability.
He emphasised that transitioning from fossil fuels on which Nigeria heavily depends for public finance and foreign exchange requires careful planning and inclusive stakeholder engagement.
Participants stressed the need for evidence-based policymaking to ensure that Nigeria’s green transition supports economic growth, protects vulnerable populations, and strengthens energy access. Discussions also examined fuel subsidy reforms and hybrid transition strategies that combine gas development with renewable energy expansion.
The initiative aims to provide actionable recommendations to guide policymakers, investors, and stakeholders toward building a resilient and sustainable low-carbon energy future for Nigeria.
