An elderly cleric, Ladan Zubairu, was killed on Monday morning at Yusuf Garko Mosque in the Maraba Quarters area of Kano State.
The attack occurred at dawn while Zubairu was calling Muslims to prayer. According to his son, Isa Kasim, the cleric had completed the first call to prayer and was seated when an assailant entered the mosque and slit his throat.
Following the attack, an angry mob chased and lynched the suspect. His residence was also set ablaze, causing panic before security operatives restored calm.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said police intervened swiftly and normalcy has returned to the area.
The bodies of both the victim and the suspect were recovered and taken to the Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for autopsy. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has ordered a full investigation.
Police have urged residents to remain calm and assist with information as investigations continue.
