Dunamis-Icon Limited, the project consultants for the Niger Delta Games, has completed the first phase of facility inspection in Edo State, just 24 hours after the state received hosting rights for the regional sporting event.
The inspection team, led by Sir Itiako Ikpokpo, visited major sports venues in Benin City with officials of the Edo State Sports Commission. Among the facilities assessed were the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Wire Road Sports Centre, University of Benin Sports Complex, and Etete Sports Centre.
Ikpokpo expressed satisfaction with the existing infrastructure, describing Edo as a suitable and well-prepared host state. He noted that more than 3,000 athletes, coaches, and technical officials are expected at the Games, alongside thousands of spectators. According to him, facilities must meet standard requirements to ensure a smooth and successful event.
While commending the good condition of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, he added that some areas may still require light renovation and upgrades. Dunamis-Icon Limited has assured Edo State of support in improving the identified facilities to meet competition standards.
The Niger Delta Games is an initiative aimed at fostering unity and promoting sports development across the nine Niger Delta states. It also seeks to identify and nurture young talents who can represent the region and Nigeria at national and international levels.
Sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission, the Games form part of a broader strategy to engage youths and strengthen human capital development through sports.
