Mavin Records boss Don Jazzy has set social media abuzz after revealing the staggering investment behind Rema’s global smash hit, Calm Down, offering rare insight into the financial scale required to break an African record on the world stage.
Since founding Mavin Records in 2012, Don Jazzy has steadily transformed the label from a Nigerian powerhouse, home to stars like D’Banj, Tiwa Savage and Wande Coal—into a globally recognised hit factory. With newer acts such as Rema and Ayra Starr shattering international records, the music executive’s latest comments have highlighted the calculated risks and heavy financial commitments involved in building a global African music empire.
The revelation came during a special episode of The Bounce on Bounce 89.1 FM, hosted by veteran on-air personality Toolz. The interview, which also featured Don Jazzy’s latest signees, Lövn and CupidSzn, provided an uncommon look into the business mechanics behind international music success.
The Business Behind a Global Smash
During the conversation, attention inevitably turned to the extraordinary global run of Calm Down and its remix featuring American pop star Selena Gomez. When asked about the logistics and cost of pushing the song worldwide, Don Jazzy was blunt.
“A song like ‘Calm Down’, we spent close to four–five million dollars to get it to where it is. People don’t know,” he said.
According to him, the investment covered extensive digital marketing campaigns, playlist promotions, global distribution strategies, and high-level collaborations, including the remix released through partnerships involving Jonzing World and Interscope Records.
When asked how much revenue the song has generated in return, Don Jazzy responded with a smile, saying simply, “A lot sha.”
The disclosure immediately sparked reactions online, with fans and industry observers expressing shock at the scale of investment behind what many perceive as an “overnight” success.
The Legacy of Calm Down
Released in February 2022 as part of Rema’s debut album Rave & Roses, Calm Down laid the groundwork for what would become one of Afrobeats’ most successful records ever. However, the song’s global explosion followed the release of its remix with Selena Gomez in August 2022, a collaboration that proved to be a masterstroke.
The remix propelled the track across major global markets, pushing Afrobeats deeper into mainstream pop culture. In the United States, Calm Down became the highest-peaking and longest-charting African song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number three and spending over 58 weeks on the chart.
In Europe, the song topped the UK Singles Chart and reached number one in several countries, including France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Mexico. It also achieved multi-platinum certification in the United States, reflecting millions of sales and streams.
Beyond charts, Calm Down became a cultural phenomenon. It ranked among the most-streamed songs globally in 2023 and has amassed well over a billion streams across platforms. The remix’s music video on YouTube currently stands as the most-viewed video by an African artist, surpassing 1.2 billion views.
The Rising Cost of Music Marketing
Don Jazzy’s comments have reignited conversations about the escalating cost of music marketing in today’s digital-driven industry. With artists required to maintain visibility across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, X, Snapchat and streaming services, promotion has become increasingly expensive.
Several Nigerian artistes have previously spoken about these challenges. Afrobeats singer Shoday recently disclosed that promoting a single can cost as much as $50,000, with expenses rising significantly when targeting international markets in Europe and the Americas. Industry insiders note that social media campaigns alone can run into tens of millions of naira.
While concerns persist that high marketing spend does not always guarantee results, Calm Down stands as a clear example of what can happen when a massive investment aligns with the right song, strategy and timing.
As Don Jazzy’s revelation shows, global success in modern music is rarely accidental. Behind the viral moments and chart records often lies a meticulously executed, multi-million-dollar plan, one that, when successful, can redefine both an artist’s career and an entire genre.
