The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reports a sharp rise in cooking gas prices. The average price of 5kg gas increased from N6,395.82 in September to N8,081.75 in October.
This represents a 26.36% month-on-month increase, NBS highlighted in its October “Cooking Gas Price Watch.” Year-on-year, prices also rose by 16.86% from N6,915.69 recorded in October 2024. State-level analysis shows Borno recorded the highest average at N8,376.44, followed by Yobe and Ondo.
Bauchi recorded the lowest price at N7,051.54, while Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom followed closely.Regional analysis revealed the North-West had the highest average at N8,188.55, North-Central followed.
The South-South region recorded the lowest average price at N7,956.61. For 12.5kg cylinders, the average retail price rose by 15.36% from N16,155.09 to N18,636.77. On a yearly basis, 12.5kg gas increased by 11.37% from N16,734.55 in October 2024.
Borno led with the highest 12.5kg price at N19,391.57, while Ebonyi recorded the lowest. North-East recorded the highest zonal price at N18,953.86, with South-South remaining lowest. Experts link price surges to the recent PENGASSAN strike and Dangote Refinery disruptions.
Additionally, ongoing maintenance at Nigeria LNG Train 4 facility contributed to rising costs. Consumers are advised to monitor price trends and plan purchases carefully. The government continues to address industrial actions and supply challenges affecting gas prices.
