Indigenes and property owners in Ado-Odo, within Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, have sounded the alarm over intensified clay mining operations. They warned that the excavations now pose significant environmental and safety risks to residents.
Under the Ado-Odo Progressive Union, community members accused a mining firm of reckless excavation practices. They alleged that operators dig dangerously close to homes, farms, and access roads. Consequently, the activities have left behind massive water-filled pits across the area.
During a recent visit, residents described the excavation scale as disturbing and excessive. Akeem Alagbe explained that earlier protests compelled government officials to intervene. Similarly, Tajudeen Akinwande alleged that the operations breached established mining regulations.
He disclosed that authorities previously sealed one mining site and issued an abatement notice. However, he claimed the company later dumped laterite to conceal evidence. He added that one pit excavated in 2024 remains alarmingly deep.
Meanwhile, Olusegun Aina highlighted rising environmental and public health concerns. He explained that stagnant water in the pits breeds mosquitoes during rainy periods. Moreover, he described the excavations as dangerous traps for unsuspecting residents.
Some residents also raised security concerns around active mining locations. They alleged that certain operators intimidate individuals who challenge their activities. As a result, anxiety continues to spread across affected neighbourhoods.
Union members further condemned years of environmental degradation by licensed and illegal miners. They demanded an immediate suspension of excavation within residential zones. Additionally, they called for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment.
They urged the Ogun State Government to review mining licenses and enforce strict compliance. They also requested land remediation and compensation for affected residents.
In response, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, pledged to investigate the allegations thoroughly.
